Portrait Florne DemostheneFlorine Demosthene grew up in the United States and Haiti, moving between New York and Port-au-Prince. She currently resides on the African continent, mostly in Ghana, but with stretches in Benin and South Africa.
Demosthene has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design in New York and an MFA from Hunter College, City University of New York. She is the recipient of a Tulsa Artist Fellowship, an Arts Moves Africa Grant and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant. She has participated in residencies in the USA, the UK, Slovakia, Ghana and Tanzania. Her work can be seen at the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Lowe Musem of Art of Miami and in various private collections worldwide. In 2014 she was officially invited to participate in the Dak’Art Biennale.
Recent solo exhibitions include The Burst at Gallery MOMO (South Africa) and GET AZZMATIZED! at the Fondation Clément (La Martinique) and her group exhibitions includeNew Portraiture at VOLTA 13 – Basel, LIFE VS TIME at the Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery in London, Transformative Vision at the Lowe Art Museum in Miami and NordArt 2014 at Kunstwerk Carlshütte in Germany, among many others.
